5 AI prompts every freelance UI/UX designer should steal
Lead magnet teaser from Clientrail. Copy into ChatGPT/Claude. Replace the brackets. Delete any metrics the model invents.
Most “AI for designers” lists are generic. These map to moments that actually burn freelancers: messy discovery, vague critique, redesign focus, handoff gaps, and sticky client email.
Prompt 1 — Discovery that surfaces the real problem
Act as a senior product designer preparing a 45-minute discovery call for a freelance UI/UX engagement.
Client type: [e.g. B2B SaaS founder]
Problem they stated: "[paste their words]"
Offer I sell: [UX audit / UI redesign / app UI / landing page]
Produce a timed agenda with questions that surface: goals, users, constraints, success metrics,
decision-makers, and timeline. No salesy filler. Flag if their ask is a solution masquerading as a problem.
Prompt 2 — Critique without redesigning everything
Critique this UI (description or structure below) for a freelance delivery pass.
Use modern product-UI heuristics. For each issue give: severity (High/Med/Low), evidence, suggested fix direction.
Do NOT redesign the whole product. Focus on task success, hierarchy, states (empty/error/loading), and clarity of CTA.
UI:

Prompt 3 — Redesign brief from a chaotic wish list
Turn this wish list into a redesign brief a solo UI/UX freelancer can execute.
Goals: [paste]
Wish list: [paste]
Budget/time constraints: [paste]
Output: goals, users, in-scope flows/screens, out-of-scope, constraints, success metrics,
Figma deliverables, and Phase 1 vs later. Be blunt about what does not fit the constraints.
Prompt 4 — Dev handoff checklist
Generate a design-to-dev handoff checklist for this project.
Project type: [marketing site / dashboard / mobile app UI]
Stack if known: [paste]
Breakpoints: [list]
Include: foundations (type, color, spacing), components and states, responsive rules,
motion notes, asset export, and open questions. Checkbox format. No fluff.
Prompt 5 — Scope creep reply (firm, relationship-safe)
Write a short client email.
They asked: "[paste ask]"
Original SOW summary: "[paste]"
Acknowledge the idea, map it to out-of-scope, and offer three options: swap something out,
move to a later phase, or a paid change order. Tone: calm, peer-to-peer, no apology spiral.
Keep under 150 words.
